Student Success and Testimonials

Real reviews from my students!
  • After being a student of Andrew's for the past two years, I have been constantly impressed by his encouraging and generous nature, not to mention his musical knowledge. I started playing tenor saxophone in a band for people over 55. This is my first instrument. Andrew is very patient and I mean very! He is very knowledgeable about his craft and is keen to generously share that knowledge with you. I sometimes come to my lesson feeling guilty for not having practised but have always left my lesson feeling encouraged and motivated. If I could give him 10 stars I would. He's great!

  • I have been taking private lessons, for the tenor sax, with Andrew for well over 2 years. As a senior I have been impressed by his patience and his ability to try different ways to get me to learn a new skill. (Not an easy task sometimes!) As well as being very personable, he is a great communicator and teacher who knows his instruments and his music theory. In addition he is an excellent musician. Highly recommended!

  • I would like to commend Andrew as an superb saxophone teacher and recommend him to everyone! Weather you just starting, like me, or have been playing for a while and would like to refine your sound, he is go to person. He has very unique teaching style and progression with his teaching program, which was fitting for me 100%. After just a few lessons I was able to understand the “anatomy” and principles of playing on the instrument well. Andrew really makes it a point for you to get comfortable with the instrument first and only after that gets to actual music. It was a great approach since the sax is quite a complicated instrument and it would just make no sense to learn how to play melodies if you don’t know how to use it. During my lessons with Andrew I was really impressed how he was able to instantly pick up all of my mistakes, demonstrate to me what I was doing wrong and give me very useful advices on how to correct them on the spot! Beside music Andrew is also quite knowledgable on how the body works and he implements that knowledge to explain why you can’t perform at that particular moment the way you would expect to perform. That saved me from a lot of frustration. Overall my experience of going to saxophone lessons with Andrew were nothing but amazing. As a student you will learn so much in such a short time in a comfortable, friendly and fun environment! Thank you Andrew for your words of musical wisdom. I will keep practicing and look forward to learn from you again!

ANDREW KAY

ANDREW KAY

Musician, Teacher, Sound Healer

Learning, sharing, & teaching music is one of the most powerful experiences you can have. At the age of 5, I started taking lessons on Piano in the Music for Young Children program. At age 11 I started studying with another teacher to learn Contemporary Western music on Piano, and shortly afterwards I started playing the Alto Saxophone. My older brother, Jonathan Kay is an amazing saxophonist as well and I must give so much credit to him for inspiring me to choose the saxophone and later on choosing music as a profession, career, and life path. I’ve learned from many teachers over the 18 years I’ve been playing the saxophone, and all of them have taught me their techniques and secrets to playing the instrument and music in general. My most recent experience in Kolkata, India has shown me another system of learning. The Guru Shishya Parampara is an ancient learning system where a Guru and Disciple enter into a relationship of learning with the intent to carry on the traditions of that line of Gurus. Stemming from the spiritual systems evolved in the Vedic era, this special relationship (in it’s truest sense) is now almost lost amongst the fast paced and modern society we live in. I feel absolutely grateful for connecting with a Guru who cherishes and strives to cultivate this ancient tradition. For the past 7 years I have had the incredible opportunity to live and learn under Master Musician & Vocalist Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya, continuing on the powerful tradition of Indian Classical Raga Music and applying it to the Saxophone. My brother and I are amongst the only people in the world pursuing this path in the hopes to carry on the legacy of this music and bring together the West and the East, consolidating and uniting the global cultural village that is this earth. Having spend many years learning under different teachers and specifically in this Eastern training system with my Guru, I feel that it is absolutely important to pass along the great knowledge and wisdom that has been shared with me. Since teaching my very first music lesson I have been developing my own methods and systems of teaching and passing along the beauty of music, and I feel blessed to have interacted with so many wonderful students and musicians over the years. Music is one of the most personal experiences we can have, I hope to help my students discover that for themselves and develop the skills to find meaning in music and develop the ability to connect with others through music. May we all find the peace of mind and love in our hearts to feel connected to each other through the universal vibrations of music.
